ANS: - The star travel through a universe so immense that it is a very rare event for one star to come anywhere near to another. Moreover, an average star is well over a million miles from its nearest neighbor on a scale model. Therefore, a star seldom finds another star near it.
Q#2:- What happened when, according to Sir James Jeans, a wandering star, wandering through space, came near the sun?
ANS: - According to Sir James Jeans, when a wandering star came near the sun, its tidal pull must have raised very high tides on the surface of the sun.
Q#3:- What are planets and how did they come into existence?
ANS: - Planets are the heavenly bodies that revolve round the sun. They came into existence as a result of a rare event when a wandering star came near the sun.

ANS: - when a wandering star came nearer and nearer the sun, its tidal pull must have raised very high tides on the surface of the sun. At last, it formed a mountain so high that we can hardly imagine.

ANS: - There is no life on the stars because the stars are the collection of fires scattered through space. They are so far too hot for the life to exist because life needs suitable physical conditions for its existence.
Q#6:- Write a note on the beginning of life on the earth? /How did life come into being on earth?
ANS: - Life started in simple organisms, whose living power consisted chiefly in their ability to reproduce themselves before dying.
Q#7:-Why is the universe, of which our earth is a part, so frightening? Give as many reasons as you can.
ANS: - Things that frighten us about the universe according to Sir James Jeans are its immense distances, great stretches of time, our littleness and loneliness in space and the impossibility of the existence of life like our own at anywhere else.
Q#8:-What, in your opinion, should be the conditions, for the kind of life we know to exist on other heavenly bodies? Do such conditions generally exist?
ANS:- Life needs suitable physical condition for its existence. The most important of which is the temperature at which substances can exist in a liquid state. Such conditions generally do not exist on other heavenly bodies.

ANS: - When the wandering star began to move away, its tidal pull tore the mountain of the molten matter to pieces that were thrown off into space.

Q#1:-How has the scientific method helped us in our fight against disease?
ANS:- In the past, the people died of fatal diseases like yellow fever, typhus, cholera, typhoid fever, measles and whooping cough. The scientific method has helped us in our fight against diseases with the invention of modern medicine and epidemic control.
Q#2:- Write a note on the better sanitary conditions available in our cities today and compare them with what they were like a hundred years ago?
ANS: - One hundred years ago, sanitary condition in our larger cities were very poor. Streets were narrow, unpaved, and poorly drained. Garbage was thrown in the streets. Outdoor toilets were common
But today our city streets are paved, well drained and well cleaned. Sewage from all section of city is carried through sealed pipes. Clean water is supplied to the inhabitants.
Q#3:- What are the sanitary conditions like in our villages today and how would you improve them?
ANS: - In our villages, sanitary conditions are not good. Streets are not paved and well drained. System of sewerage is not proper. Outdoor toilets are common.
 We can improve them by proper planning and by making the people conscious about there health. Streets must be paved. Garbage must be thrown at specific places.
Q#4:- How has the scientific method helped us in the production and preservation of foods?
ANS: - It has been made possible to increase the production of food by using various fertilizers and pesticides manufactured by the scientific method. Moreover, the scientific method has also enabled us to find new ways like dehydration, quick freeze method etc. to increase the quality of the preservation of foods.
Q#5:-We are now generally less fearful than over ancestors. What were our ancestors afraid of?
ANS: - We are now generally less fearful than our ancestors because they believed in the sign of good or bad luck. They were afraid of black cats, broken mirrors and the no. 13. They wore different kinds of charms to avoid bad luck.
Q#6:- What part did astrology play in the lives of men and women in the past? Give examples.
ANS:- Astrology and fortune-telling affected of people greatly in the past. People attributed both good and bad influences to stars. They consulted sorcerers and astrologist before doing anything.
Q#7:- How has the scientific method enabled us to get over the old fears?
ANS: - Superstitious beliefs are got over by the use of the scientific method which has shown that there is no sound basis for them. It has taught us that there is always a good natural reason for everything that happens.

(WHY BOYS FAIL IN COLLEGE)

ANS:-According to the author there are some boys who fail because they do not try. They are the students who do not concentrate on their studies due to some nervous habits. We can help them by just pointing out the problem. The boys should change their habits by themselves.
Q#2:- How does mistaken ambition on the part of boys and their parents lead to the failure of the boys?
ANS:- Mistaken ambition for the boys on the part of their parents leads to the failure of the boys because they follow a direction mapped out by their parents that runs opposite to all of their  interests and abilities.
Q#3:- There are some boys who have done well at school but fail to make their mark at college. Who are they? Do you have such boys in college in you country?
ANS:-They are the bright boys who consider college level an easy step. They become overconfident and do not work hard. They suppose that they can float through college with little effort as they did through school, so they fail to make their mark at college.
Q#4:- How does financial pressure lead to the failure of student describe in the lesson? Do you have similar cases in your country?
ANS: - Financial pressure leads to the failure of student because they themselves have to earn for their college expenses. They have to do part-time jobs to make both ends meet because their parents do not support them. We have many similar cases in our country.
Q#5:- To what extent does the question of health lead to failure at college? How far can the college authorities with their medical officers help students in such cases?
ANS:- An immense number of boys fail due to poor physical and mental health. They
Cannot concentrate on the assigned tasks properly due to different diseases. The college authorities can avoid their failure if they have an adequate health service and a proper cooperation between the teaching staff and the college doctor.
Q#6:- What place would you accord to sportsmen in colleges?
ANS: - Sportsmen are the celebrities of any college. The co-curricular activities and sports have their own place in college, and only those students should participate in them who are interested in them and want to become professional.
Q#7:- There are some students who join college for the fun of it. Should they be allowed to stay?
ANS:- There are few lazy bluffers who do not find any serious interest in life and join college just for fun. Sometimes they learn a lesson and return to first rate work. They should not be allowed to stay if they do not change their behavior because one black sheep can contaminate the whole flock.

Q#1:- What was Daiches’ attitude towards the week-end as a school boy? Why did he long for it? / Describe the attitude of David Daiches towards Friday and Friday night.
ANS: - Daiches’ attitude towards the week-end was that of happiness and gratitude. He longed for week-end because it relieved him from the daily grind of school, its abundant home work, and sense of never being able to relax.
Q#2:- What was his general view of school life? / Why was the writer fed up with the school?
ANS: - Daiches’ general view of school life was not very pleasant. He thought that school was a place of intense hard work and tough competition. The school home work seemed to him an oppressive burden, though he was not a dull student and actually enjoyed the classroom work.
Q#3:- He liked holidays for their freedom – freedom from what? Why did David Daiches like holidays?
ANS: - The writer liked holidays because they freed him from daily grind of school, its abundant homework and fierce competition. They provided him happiness and peace of mind too. 
Q#4:- How did he spend his summer holidays?
ANS: - For Daiches, only summer holidays were “the holidays”. It seemed to him a period of great joy and permanent felicity because he was free from the daily grind of school and could enjoy his holidays freely at the place of his own choice.
 Q#5:- Wishes don’t come true in this life, writer Daiches. What are the things he longed for but could not have?
ANS: - He remarked so because he wished to have a tricycle and then a bicycle in his childhood but could not get either. He also desired to have a cornet or a slider free of cost but he had to be disappointed every time.
Q#6:- What did he do with his pocket money?
ANS: - David Daiches spent his childhood in poverty. He got little sum as pocket money which he had to save in a money-box. Therefore, he rarely got a chance to spend it on himself.

ANS: - The writer felt extremely burdensome on Sunday night because it was full of the threat of Monday morning which would resume the daily grind of school with its abundant homework.

ANS: - Friday morning was positively rose-colored. In the afternoon, he walked home from school like an escaped prisoner, no matter how much work had been assigned to him. Friday night was the best night of the week for him because it had two solid days before school again.

ANS: - Monday was the worst day for the writer because it was the first working day after the week-end. The thought of spending a full week with its daily grind was quite troublesome for the writer.

ANS: - Sometimes, he got an unexpected respite to attend a football match or the sudden dismissal of school an hour or two before the usual time because of some crisis or celebration. Daiches would get a skating holiday in winter, if there had been a continuous hard frost for some days.
E: Q#5:-When and how did Daiches buy his first bicycle?
ANS: - Daiches bought his first bicycle when he was twenty-one with the prize money he had won at Edinburgh University.
